I would like to share mt beliefs in regards to this topic.
(Not that it has any authority)
1st, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE OT AND NT MINISTRIES.
When it comes to God's mercy there is no difference. ( There was a mercy seat" as a solid gold covering placed on top of the Ark of the Covenant in the OT which is seen as a foreshadowing or type of Christ. )
The mercy seat is shown as a symbol of means of forgiveness following a law given that is known as the Administration of condemnation and Administration of Death.
2 Corinthians 3:7-9.
As for the penalty of sin and God's wrath which is to come.
The wrath to come was initiated or caused in the Garden of Eden.
There is an curse on ALL creation and an unrepentant sin nature on Man.
This nature loves darkness.
If you gave man a 1000 years in hell he'll still have that sin nature after the 1000 years was filled.
If you gave man peace on earth for a 1000 years without the devil influence and release the Devil when the 1000 years is filled Man will still display that rebellious nature.
You see a glimpse of this type of unrepentant rebellious demonic nature in Revelation, even while being tormented! Revelation 16:8-11.
Man is needing to be redeemed! Initially he doesn't know and want it.
However,
I believe there is the true light or/and restrainer (all the same being) that reveals and restrains evil and to recieve truth provided to all men.
This light is to reveal their depravity and to lead them out of darkness to Christ or openly reject him and be condemned with the world.

2 Thessalonians 2:6-7
John 1:8-10.
John 3:17-21
Man has an everlasting Spirit and it's either one that is forever rebellious and continuously influenced by Satan in this life and the after life or he is continuously influenced by the Holyspirit which brought him to Christ and abides in him.
Blessings.
The Big wheel that our world spins is about rumours and what heat the devil whips up! Carlyle writes thus,"The oak grows silently, in the forest, a thousand years; only in the thousandth year, when the woodman arrives with his axe, is there heard an echoing through the solitudes; and the oak announces itself when, with a far-sounding crash, itfalls. How silent too was the planting of the acorn; scattered from the lap of some wandering wind! Nay, when our oak flowered, or put on its leaves (its glad Events), what shout of proclamation could there be? Hardly from the most observant a word of recognition. These thingsbefellnot, they were slowlydone;not in an hour, but through the flight of days: what was to be said of it? This hour seemed altogether as the last was, as the next would be.
It is thus everywhere that foolish Rumour babbles not of what was done, but of what was misdone or undone; and foolish History (ever, more or less, the written epitomised synopsis of Rumour) knows so little that were not as well unknown."quote from the French Revolution"
In the welter of conspiracy theories and alternative truth imposter churches are tossed around and it is time for the believers to follow St Paul's word."Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong."( 1 Cor. 16.13)
When we meet the Lord in mid-air all the shout of triumph is from heaven. "And the dead in Christ shall rise first:/Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord."(1 Thess.7.16-17)
"And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour."(Rev.8.1)
Isaiah speaks of the word of God that shall never return to him void. (Isa.55.11) This planting of the word as a seed, works silently in every heart so there is an impulse between these two worlds and how each works with it is his own responsibility. Think of history of mankind what is recorded do not tell the truth; Instead we have science relying on supposition working from the other end to the source of the Big Bang. Now it is the Big Wheel, discovery of which has revealed yet another mystery of the early universe, showing that our current models of galaxy evolution still need refinement. With more observations and discoveries of massive, early galaxies like the Big Wheel, astronomers will be able to unlock more secrets about how the universe built the structures we see today.
"The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:/Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you."( Lk. 17.20-21) The Will of God is either whole or nothing. Man cannot cut and paste from the inerrant Bible. Those whom He did foreknow bear the tag 144000 and are on mount Sion as first fruits and the earthly ministry accordingly was to destroy the works of the devil. The silence of half an hour is our signal that the kingdom of heaven is in us and not in the hubbub we hear all about and Satan is the king of Pandemonium.
Nay, when our oak flowered, or put on its leaves
Whence did this great fish get this assignment and become a sign? In the everlasting Covenant God took care of all life forms, including marine life."And God created great whales,"(Gen.1.21) God blessed them because the Will of God saw life as a whole and in terms of his Son. Symbolism of the world framed the word is the life of man so his fall created suffering." Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God./ For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now./And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spiri.(Rom.8.21-23). Sin entered into the world because of of one man. According to the Will of God being whole we find that sin is imputed to whole mankind. Whole or nothing. "For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous."(Rom.5.19)
Joy in heaven over one sinner repents is part of holiness of God. God made us living soul so when any member of our body suffers the whole body suffers. Our body, soul and spirit witness the Trinity so it cannot be otherwise. On the contrary the rich man in the Rich man and Lazarus parable lived in luxury totally oblivious of Lazarus at the gate. He was living in the world framed by Satan. His head was muddled by laissez-faire, unilateralism, tariff wars. trickle-down economy ans such isms .the beast did sport seven such heads. Jesus Christ was manifested to destroy the works of the devil.
"Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth."
In order to understand the great spiritual truths the key verse carries let us consider for a moment what His holiness signify for us. God is a Spirit. Holy is his name. Name must be understood spiritually. So joy suffering depths or heights require spiritual discernment.
God is One so is his Will. Owing to his Power and Wisdom it must be whole or nothing. Nothing less or more. The Trinity comes in so the whole as conceived in a world unseen must be made to appear since we are approaching God in terms of the Fellowship of God with man it can be satisfactory dealt with faith since we belong to a world made to appear which is not necessarily the only one. So what is our certainty that we are doing the Will of God?
Here we have two certainties the Word which is the Law of the Spirit and faith which comes by hearing the word of God.(Rom.10.17) Faith brings our world with that of the Will in terms of the word of God. (Heb.11.3). It is a world framed by His word. Symbol of his Authority is like the head of a coin which can be also copied. This counterfeit is palmed off as real so is the world where Satan has freely put in circulation cause misery and havoc. If the Will of God is one and does not stand piecemeal Satan drives split into mankind by haves and have-nots, nations, clans and families. "The joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion,"(Ps.48.2) Instead such joy one shall never find in the world framed by Satan.
Coming back to the topic David cries, 'out of the depths' and relates to the earth."(Thou) shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth./ Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side."(vv.20-21) It identifies with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus himself gave the sign of Jonah. God had prepared a great fish.
My only suggestion is that you continue to soak yourself in God's precious Word and study in depth as much as you can. Even if you aren't able to do that, then a careful slow reading of the Scriptures is very useful, so when the opportunity arises (as in sharing the Gospel), the Holy Spirit will bring to your remembrance what He wants you to share. You may not always know where to find those verses (I'm guilty of that), but when the Living Word is alive in your heart, you can be confident that God will bring it to your mind and then for your hearer.
So what I'm suggesting here is that there is no finite set of Scriptures that can be used when in a discussion, since each person has their own questions, hang-ups, doubts, or fears, that require answers from all of the Bible. He may even start on subjects like creation/evolution, God's existence, the Flood, religious bigotry/wars, etc., etc. But with any enquiring mind & questions presented, these are opportunities for the Spirit in you to lead that soul closer to the Truth & then to our Lord Jesus, Who is the Answer to all of life's questions and needs. Of course, your own salvation experience will make the discussion more real to your listener, as you relate how you were just a lost helpless sinner as everyone on Earth is, & what the Lord had taken you through to bring you to an understanding of your need of a Savior, when you could not save yourself to be right with a Holy God.
Dear one, may the Lord bless you in your zeal for Him & be assured of His Presence that will go with you, even as you carry His Word & His Love in your heart for others in desperate need. He will give you boldness & courage to be His witness. Every blessing.
I will continue I prayer for you and your Mom. May the Lord remove this rash from you.
Would you pray for my granddaughter, Rose? She was taking an antibiotic for an ear infection and had a reaction that manifested in a rash that covers her whole body and is itchy. She has been feverish, too, most likely from the flu/covid vaccines she had on Monday. And on top of these, she is cutting her first tooth. Pray for her to sleep well tonight. We started a different class of antibiotic yesterday (non-penicillin) and give her Tylenol and Benadryl. We give her colloidal oatmeal baths and follow with a colloidal oatmeal lotion over her whole body. That seems to help.
I know some Christians get past this quandary by believing that there is no such thing as an eternal hell, but that those who do not believe, simply go into the grave & disappear (that this their judgement for unbelief); that if we are born into sin (i.e. receiving the sin nature was not of our choosing), then surely God cannot condemn us for our sin, but simply let us disappear into the ether. This understanding, though I believe is very wrong & unscriptural, does allow for an all-loving God to continue to show His Love in such a manner by not allowing them to share in His eternity in His Kingdom, yet not suffer so horribly in hell.
But the fact remains, that such a God does truly consign all those not found in Christ, to be sent to an eternal hell (created for the devil & his angels). How are we supposed to understand such a God? Does He switch emotions between those who still have breath in their bodies to those who have breathed their last? Or, is this one of those mysterious things about God (& there are many - see how the Trinity doctrine has divided believers) - and such mysteries are best left as such. If Ananias & Sapphira ( Acts 5) could be instantly judged for their sin (which many today would believe as minor), or those coming to the Lord's Table in an unworthy manner ( 1 Corinthians 11) would suffer sickness or death in quick judgement, then somehow we must be able to reconcile how such a loving God would pronounce such harsh judgement (life's cessation, not hell) to those Whom He loves & receives unto Himself? His Anger is still evident even now.
I believe that lad to be Lazarus. If you cross reference it with John 11, you can see the Jewish leaders even desiring to kill Lazarus ( John 12:10) because of Jesus raising him from the dead and the fame that gave our Lord Jesus. Plus, Jesus was staying at Bethany, where Lazarus was, at this time. So, it would make sense for Lazarus to be the Lad that runs off naked.
Dr. Ruckman makes another great point in the fact that, like I said early the Pharisees wanted to kill Lazarus. All the disciples got away, but they laid hold on someone, and he ran away naked for he knew his life was in danger! So, I strongly believe it to be Lazarus.
I will pray for you.
I'm wanting to work on more verse memorization for soul winning, witnessing, and handing out tracts. I have some verses already memorized, but is there any verses you would recommend? I figured I would memorize the "Romans Road". But, if you have any more suggestions or maybe a favorite verse I'd love to hear those. Thanks!
Ecclesiasticus 12:6
"For the most High hateth sinners, and will repay vengeance unto the ungodly, and keepeth them against the mighty day of their punishment."
Matthew 23:2-3
"Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not."
2 Timothy 3:2 continued
There are some that are doing that who are not doing it as boasters, but most people do. In our society people strive for things. When young people get cars, they try and pick one that fits their image, and that's why they roll the window down and crank up the stereo so you can hear it three miles away. So, boasters are people who use material things to boast.
Proud, blasphemers, and the word blasphemy, first of all when it's towards God, it is anything that is against God. But when it's towards people, it is the same word that is used for slander.
Sixthly, disobedient to parents. The word disobedience means a refusal to be persuaded. Now we know in Ephesians 6:1, it says children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. The word obey is HUPAKOUO which means put your hearing under.
That's what obedience is. Children are to put their hearing under their parents as the parents are leading and guiding them, especially in the things of the Lord. Well, in the last days children will be disobedient. They will refuse to be persuaded by the parents.
Seventhly, unthankful. In the Greek text, this is the word grace, CHARIS, with the alpha-privative in front of it. Thankfulness is actually a response to God's grace. That's what it means. Thankfulness does not originate with me thanking God. It's my response to the grace of God upon my life.
Unholy, that is, profaning the holy things of God.
Verse 3 gives us the ninth characteristic:
2 Timothy 3:2 - For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
Number one, for men shall be lovers of their own selves. Secondly, covetous, which literally means lovers of money, PHILARGUROI. It is the same word that is found in 1 Timothy 6:10 where it says for the love of money is the root of all evil.
So, the first two have to do with love, lovers of their own selves, and lovers of money. The word love is PHILOS, which means to be fond of or to be friendly towards. It means to rearrange one's life to make these things a priority, first our own selves, and then money.
Thirdly, boasters. This word is found in 1 John 2:15-16. John says love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.
Pride of life is the same word. And the pride of life is not of the Father, but is of the world. So, when it has to do with material things, it has to do with using one's material things to boast. In other words, I go out and buy two or three expensive cars, and I build a multimillion-dollar house up on a hill and try to get the best of everything. It's a status thing!
2 Timothy 2:17 - And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;
The word canker (GAGGRAINA) is the Greek word for gang green. If you listen to enough people who are not teaching the truth, your soul will not be healthy. It will be diseased. Hymenaeus and Philetus were two people who began to teach something that was different than what Paul said.
2 Timothy 2:21 - If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.
The word purge is the word cleanse, himself from these things, that is, these iniquities, he shall be a vessel for honor,
3 things: Having been sanctified (set apart). And meet (more literally useful), for the master. And thirdly, prepared unto every good work. Again, the word good is AGATHOS which has to do with spiritual good. The one who comes for cleansing and confessing his sins, will be a vessel of honor, set apart by God for His use, and prepared for every good work that God has for them.
2 Timothy 3:1 - This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
He says this know. That's a command. In the last days perilous times shall come. The word perilous is translated variously by the word danger or difficult, and the Greek word itself, CHALEPOS, means more than just difficult times.
The other place in which this word perilous is found is in Matthew 8:28. This is when Jesus came across the lake to the other side of the country of the Gergesenes. And there met Him two possessed with devils coming out of the tombs. These were two men who were demon possessed, exceeding fierce (CHALEPOS). It means to be fierce, or harsh. It describes the activity of demons. In the last days, it's not just going to be difficult times. It's going to be fierce. It's going to be harsh. He gives the reason starting in Verse 2, as he lists for us 18 characteristics of people in the last days.
2 Timothy 2:7 - Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.
He says consider what I say; And the word consider is the Greek word NOEO for perception. Perceive what I am saying to you, and the Lord give you understanding in all things. Now I'll share this with you literally because there is no word "that" in Verse 8. He says remember Jesus Christ. Perceive what I am saying. May the Lord give you understanding.
2 Timothy 2:9 - Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.
Wherein I suffer trouble, again because of the gospel. I suffer as an evil doer. He's in prison like a criminal, even unto bonds; and that's the Greek word for chains.
Here it is: but the word of God is not bound. There's an old saying that comes from this verse, "You can bind the messenger, but you cannot bind the message."
2 Timothy 2:10 - Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
He says, therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, and the word endure is HUPOMENO which means to remain under. I remain under all of my difficult circumstances because I can be bound, but the gospel can't. Therefore, I endure all these things.
Paul didn't have the attitude of if I can just get out of here, I could preach down at the coliseum and have a big crusade going. Paul says I endure everything because even though I am limited, the gospel's not. I preach the gospel wherever I am enduring the hardships, so that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
2 Timothy 2:5 - And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.
We have to sort of dissect this because it really doesn't bring out what it is saying. The term strive for masteries is the word ATHLEI, where we get our word athletic from. So, if a man becomes involved in the athletic discipline, yet he's not crowned, except he ATHLEI lawfully. If you don't keep the rules, you get eliminated.
He's talking here about the disciplines. Paul's not talking about salvation here. He's talking about influence. So, he's telling Timothy that a person who is involved in the athletic process, he is not crowned, except that he participates lawfully, according to the rules.
2 Timothy 2:6 - The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.
The husbandman (farmer) that labors. The word labor is a Present Participle and it means to labor to the point of exhaustion. The farmer will get started at three or four in the morning and not get back home until dark. All that work, all that plowing, and they have to take care of the cows, and the harvesting, and all these various things. There were no rules about taking breaks or time off. They just worked!
Well, the farmer that continually labors to the point of exhaustion, he looks forward to the harvest. He looks forward to the participation of the fruits. He's telling Timothy, as a farmer labors to the point of exhaustion, look forward to the fruit, the harvest that's going to come. Don't get discouraged if it doesn't come right away. There's a season for it. It is necessary that the farmer first be partaker of the fruits of the harvest.
2 Timothy 2:4 - No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
No man that is warring entangles himself with the affairs of this life; Ouch! A person who is in the military belongs to the government. They belong to the military. If one night you decide to go somewhere off base, but the military says that you are not getting off base because we have some things for you to do, you're stuck. That's just the way it is. They own you!
Can you imagine this? No one who is involved in the war entangles himself with the affairs of this life. The word affairs is PRAGMA, the various issues of life. We experience them. The word entanglement is interesting. It's the word for the braiding of hair. So, you interweave and get caught up into the various issues of life.
And pretty soon you find yourself saying to the Lord, "Lord, I don't have time because now the affairs of life own me, and they won't let me go study the word!" And Paul is saying that it should be the other way around. Once that once you are saved, Satan cannot get your soul. But he will do everything he can to distract a believer (MERIMNA) into staying away from the word of God because the second part of the Christian life in Romans Chapter 12 says is the renewing of the mind.
He says no man wars, or entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who has chosen him as a soldier, literally enlisted him. How many of us have been convicted many times in our walk with the Lord that we are not making decisions that are pleasing to Him? He called us. He set us apart for Him. He made us one of His children. He made us a soldier for Christ. We're in the Lord's army.
We're fighting the winning battle, which is great, but we can tell by the conviction of God's Spirit when we make decisions that are not pleasing to Him, and it takes us away from the very purpose and reason for Him calling.
Study of Psalm 71
"By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother's bowels."
The key verse resonates with the virgin birth of Jesus, and Isaiah foretold this as a sign. Mt.1.21-23. The same will concerning the Word becoming flesh renders the earth made to appear by the Will of God and it has a quality: the earth abides forever. The law of entropy is for the natural world and for sons of perdition. Those who are the blessed shall be the body, the church.
In other words we belong to the generation of Jesus Christ. "Now also when I am old and greyheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come."(Ps.71.18)
By grace of God my testimony as I am nearing my 82 nd. birthday is same as David. All glory and honour to God who blessed me and set out the course I should take.
Ps.71.6-7
"By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother's bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee./ I am as a wonder unto many."
Here we have David's prayer in which he is aligning himself with Christ who serves his own soul as a sign. It must be be understood in conjunction with Psalm 139. "My soul knoweth right well' sounds as credo in terms of the Word which was with God. David is a double for the Son by which he is created after our image as well as 'after our likeness.'
The Word was God so the word of God frames the world and it is nothing what Science would term the rise of life in a physical world where laws of nature shall work in a certain predetermined path. What they overlook these laws are pendent to the Law of the Spirit. The composite picture of the Ancient of days tells of the world made to appear is to be a perfect of what He has willed. The Spirit consequently presents us the book of remembrance and it is to be spiritually understood. Consider the following passage:
My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth./Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them./How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! ...when I awake, I am still with thee.:(Ps.139.14-18)
Thanks for sharing your point of view.
I think we can exit this discussion as we have both presented our view well and are at an impasse.
How is it possible for God to hate sinners at the same time He asks us to love them? Those two are opposite to one another, aren't they?'
God hates sin (the act) but He loves sinners (the people) and wishes all of them to be saved, that is why He gave His son. Nobody gives a son for sacrifice for people they hate.
Firstly we have to understand what is meant in scripture with "the wrath of God". It mainly means the righteous Judgement of God. But we have to remember dear GiGi that we are living in the age of grace. Jesus said it clearly, "I have not come to judge (condemn/punish) people but to save them." Since Jesus' resurrection God's grace is available to all people. Of course not everybody is going to ask for it and be saved but still it is available to everybody who wish for it. God's wrath can not be revealed during the time of grace, which for all people is the time of their life. After their death then yes they will be judged and condemned for what they have or have not done. But while one is still alive they are under that grace, not under wrath.
The verses you mentioned are to be seen during the final Judgement, not during our lives.
Now about us been selected by God, my belief is that we have been selected by God just because He knows beforehand that we are going to accept Him, not because of any other unknown reason. This is one of the things I am definite and absolutely sure about.
Do not be confused with the OT. In the OT there was no forgiveness, although God sometimes showed His true character and forgave some people like King David. Remember the man that selected wood on Sabbath? Remember that boy that talked bad to his parents?. God's Judgement fall immediately upon them without even given them the right to repent. This is what wrath is. But we are living (thanks God) in another age, in the age when God is mercyful to sinners and gives them all the time needed to repent, so that nobody will find an excuse during the final Judgement
GBU
2 Timothy 2:1 - Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
God's grace is sufficient. That's what God told Paul in 2 Corinthians Chapter 12 when he wanted the thorn in the flesh removed. God says my grace is sufficient for you. No matter what the situation, God's grace is sufficient. But it is through His grace that we receive our strength and power, not in ourselves.
In fact, the term be strong is one compound Greek word that means to be empowered. Be empowered in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
2 Timothy 2:2 - And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
Here's the deposit. The father deposits to the son all of his experience and all of his knowledge, and all of his wisdom. The son is then told to find faithful men to teach the same thing to them. It is important to emphasize the term faithful men. Not everyone is faithful in learning about the things of Christ and learning His word.
In 1 Corinthians 4:2, Paul says it must be found in a steward that they be faithful. That's the requirement of stewards. The requirement to serve and follow Christ is faithfulness. So, he says those things that you have heard from me, pass it on. But it must be to faithful men. You can take a group of people who want to learn the word, and you go along for a while, and there's great enthusiasm to begin with, but then after a while they start dropping out. It's important that we be faithful!
"Who shall be able to teach others also." Able is the Greek word for sufficiency. Teach people to the point that they will have the sufficiency to teach others also. It wasn't meant to be a program. This is what walking with Christ is all about. It's not just for me. It's not just for you. There are others around us who desire ministry, to learn from those who walk with Christ, to learn from those who study His word.
2 Timothy 1:9 - Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
Who hath saved us, and has called us with a holy calling. The Greek word for holy means set apart. It's a calling that sets us apart for Christ.
2 Timothy 1:13 - Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
He says hold fast, and that's a command to hold firm, one word in Greek, ECCA. Hold firm to the pattern of healthy words, which you have heard from me.
2 Timothy 1:17 - But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.
The Greek text emphasizes that Onesiphorus came to Rome specifically looking for Paul, and he wasn't going to stop until he found him. Everybody else didn't want anything to do with Paul, but Onesiphorus who was from Ephesus is now in Rome, and he's seeking Paul out. And he found Paul, and he wasn't ashamed to be associated with him when he was looking at Paul chained up in prison.
2 Timothy 1:18 - The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.
Even when Paul was in Ephesus before he was imprisoned, Onesiphorus was right there serving Paul, being a ministry to him even before he was imprisoned. So, there are what are called Optative Verbs. May God bless and have mercy on Onesiphorus, because he identified with the gospel, he identified with Paul, he identified with Paul's sufferings. He wasn't ashamed of it. He wasn't afraid of it. Paul says may God have mercy on him and on his household.
2 Timothy 1:6 - Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
The Greek word for stirring up, it means to rekindle. Here's a fire that's about ready to go out, so you throw more wood on the fire to get the fire going again. It's an interesting term because Paul is noticing that as Timothy is withdrawing more and more because of his timidity, because of his lack of courage to face up to the tremendous attack against the gospel and the church, that he's quenching God's Spirit.
2 Timothy 2:7 - For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
God hath not given us the spirit of fear; That's the word cowardice. It's not PHOBOS, which is the normal word for fear. DEILIA is the word for cowardice. God hasn't given us a spirit to be cowards, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. And the Greek word for sound mind means a disciplined mind. God hasn't given us a disposition of cowardice. God's Spirit gives us power, and love, and a disciplined mind.
What he's telling him when he says stir up the gift, he's saying stand up to the plate. You have God's Spirit. You have testimony that you have God's Spirit. You have testimony of the brethren. We laid hands on you. You have the same faith as your grandmother, and as your mother.
You can see him building up the exhortation, building up the encouragement for Timothy because he's going to have an even bigger weight on his shoulders when Paul dies.
2 Timothy 1:8 - Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
He says be not thou therefore ashamed. That's not a command. It's in a Subjunctive Mood in the Greek text. Literally, you should not be ashamed Timothy. You are ashamed, and you shouldn't be.
2 Timothy 1:3 - I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;
He says I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with a pure conscience. He's telling them first of all that I'm thanking God for you Timothy. And he wants to let Timothy know that he's thanking the God whom he serves, even from his ancestors or forefathers. He's showing the common ground. Paul is serving the same God, as was the God of Israel in the Old Testament, is the God of Israel today.
But he serves him with, or more literally, in a pure conscience. Now this is not saying that Paul doesn't have sin. In fact, the word pure is more literally translated cleansed. It is with a cleansed, KATHAROS, with a cleansed conscience. That means that every time Paul sinned, he came to God and repented, and asked for forgiveness for his sins.
We see later in the letter that he encourages Timothy to find other believers who look to God with a clean conscience. Not that they don't sin, but it's very important for them to come and confess their sins to God, and keep a clear, clean conscience before God.
2 Timothy 1:5 - When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
Unfeigned is the Greek word that means un-hypocritical. In fact, HUPOCRISIS in the Greek language, that we know to be hypocrite, is actually a theatrical term for somebody who answers according to the script. That person would be a hypocrite, a person who is up on a stage portraying somebody other than themselves. And that's what the word means, to answer according to the script. And so, he remembers Timothy's faith is not an act. It's the genuine thing!
(2 Timothy Part 1): Written to Timothy who was pastoring in Ephesus and its territories because out of Ephesus went the missionary journeys. Timothy not only was pastor at Ephesus, but also several churches. We know at least the churches that are in the book of Revelation.
The Theme of 2 Timothy is Pastoral Instruction. Paul presents principles and instructions that should prevail in a local church. It is the principles and instructions for the ministry in the church in the last days. And that would include us.
2 Timothy 1:2 - To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
The term dearly beloved is one Greek word. It is the word AGAPETO, the adjective of AGAPE. He says my beloved son, and it's of faith of course. In 1 Corinthians 4:17, Paul says for this cause I sent to you Timothy, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church. Timothy was like an extension of Paul. And he even introduced him as his son, and faithful in the Lord.
Here is some additional information I would like to share. Paul calls Timothy his son, not from a human standpoint, but from a spiritual standpoint. He is his son in the gospel. And we'll see from a Hebrew and Jewish standpoint how important that is when we get into Chapter 2, when he starts giving him instruction as his son, because your son is not just the person who has descended from you, but your son is the student who you're teaching.
Not only do Jewish fathers teach their sons, but also when Rabbi's had students (disciples), they were also called his children because they stayed with the Rabbi 24 hours a day. They lived with him. He taught them. And so, Paul is actually ministering to his son in the faith, but he calls himself the apostle of Jesus Christ.
Thanks again for the prayers and concern. We had the insurance adjuster over today and he was very thorough. He found several things that we didn't see, nor would we have been too concerned about, but he added all those things to the claim list anyway. He said that anything and everything that looked like it could have possibly been dinged by the storm would be given to our insurance company. Now we are just waiting to hear from them to see what's next in this process. Thankfully, we had no damage inside the house. But yes, we will be in "remodel mode" for a while.
Romans 1:18
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness
Seems to agree with the OT verse I gave you. God does not change. But He does work according to His own pleasure, will, and purpose in the OT, NT, and in the time from the ascension through the end of times.
Here are other relevant verses from the NT that speak of the wrath of God being upon the wicked. I think this is present tense from an English perspective, but the Greek may be different.
I think that God is always the same in every way. He is true to His attributes in the OT as well as the NT. And will continue to be true to Himself in this age.
Giannis, I stand by what I have shared with you because I believe that Scriptures teach that God both hates wicked sinners and also desires that many will turn to Him and be saved, but not all will do so because not all have been elected to salvation since before creation.
Ephesians 5:5-6
For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
Colossians 3:5-6
Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
John 3:36
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. Whoever rejects the Son will not see life. Instead, the wrath of God remains on him.
