In this chapter Jesus had sent his disciples out to preach the gospel of the kingdom and to cast out demons, heal people, and do other signs and wonders. When a youth was brought before Jesus with a demon who terrorized and injured the youth, Jesus cast the demon out with His authority, which the demons must obey.
But the disciples had already tried to cast out the demon from this person and it did not come out. When they asked why this was so, Jesus first replied that it is because of their unbelief but then goes on to say that this type of demon does not come out except through prayer and fasting.
So, perhaps Jesus was saying that one must have faith that the demons will obey the command (as Jesus did) and second, that if a demon does not remove themselves from a person, even when commanded in faith, then one may need to spend time in prayer and fasting to be strengthened spiritually before confronting this demon again. It may have been a more powerful demon than the ones the disciples were able to cast out. Or maybe the disciples needed to learn humility through prayer and fasting so as not to confront such a demon with arrogance and self-will.
Whatever the reason for the prayer and fasting, Jesus was certainly teaching that one who is called to cast out demons should not walk away from the person if the demon does not come out when they first command. The called one is take these additional steps and continue to command the demon to leave until it does. The one called is to have compassion for the one possessed, seeking to bring relief and restoration to the person more than seeking to see a miracle happen. Jesus instructed His disciples to persevere and labor in prayer, denying themselves physical food in order that they will be spiritually submitted to God's strength in them when they feel physically weakened by the discipline of prayer and fasting. This may also indicate that demons are much stronger and more clever than humans.
To understand Matthew 17:21 your going to have to study and understand Isaiah 58.

The disciples asked the LORD JESUS why they couldn't heal the demon possessed boy, and the HE replied "Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting." Matthew 17: 21 If I desire healing for our land and country, I must become "salt" and turn from the leaven and honey; and praise the LORD in HIS great commission. If I am of CHRIST, then I must set my "...affections on things above and not on this earth..."
I must be willing to present my body as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto my GOD. "...And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

I write this post to remind myself of what I need to do and where my devotion unto my LORD stands at this point in my walk with HIM.
I praise the LORD for all the saints on this forum and their love for the LORD JESUS CHRIST. The sharing, declaring, and proclaiming the precious things the LORD has done for you is certainly encouraging for me to read and glorify HIM.

There seems to be several ways to 'fast" before GOD. the most important seems to be, the Heart & actions of the individual or 'people' fasting. GOD points out to deal your bread to the hungry, keep it secret, pray for justice, & do Justice, act justly. It's not to be for self exalting Isaiah 58,
Sometimes people fast (most often) by not eating or drinking for a certain time. 1 meal, 'skipping a meal" 2Samuel 1:12, Judges 20:26,
Some eat regular meals but take things out that are enjoyable like sweet treats, rich meats. Like Daniel 1, Daniel 9,
Extreme fasts were Jesus & Moses. Please only fast what the HOLY Spirit leads you to. Not other's.
Sometimes it's very good to take all media, TV, phones, devices that distract, make noises ect even Christian radio away for a time to focus, be quiet & still before GOD, that's a way to humble yourself before GOD.
In the Bible many times they would rip their clothing throw dust on their heads. Joel 2:13, said don't, but rend your hearts, Matthew 6:16, Interestingly no account witnessed Jesus do that outward display, yet Jesus healed & delivered all who believed. Some people practice a life of types of fasting. Like Jesus, Paul, 2Corinthians 11:27, Matthew 17:21, Mark 9:29 Please read, pray, be still & quiet waiting on the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY while you dedicate time, other enjoyable things unto the LORD & study HIS WORD the Bible, also turn aside/away from things, displeasing to GOD, sin = repenting from or atleast trying & attempting to (if your fasting for your own deliverance) from things like addictions, habits etc..) abstain from wine etc.
that's what I recommend on how to "fast". Again I recommend the scriptures in previous reply.
Fasting is supernaturally amazing, it most definitely changes things, saves lives, delivers, defeats oppression, & enemies.

Daniel 6:18, Jonah 3:4-10, notice these two noted here were not known as Godly people yet even their fast was recognized & rewarded by GOD, repentance & humbling themselves, before GOD.

There are somethings that have not been revealed to us like the two witnesses. Scripture does tell us these two will be killed by the beast that will ascend from the bottomless pit so, if they have died in the past they could not be killed, this flesh only dies once, Heb. 9:27. Some look at the transfiguration with Moses and Elijah but this was before Jesus was crucified and His resurrection.
Jesus is the Firstfruits of those who slept, 1Cor.15:20, and the firstborn from the dead, Cor. 1:18, and no man has ascended to heaven, John 3:13. In Matthew 17:9 Jesus told them to not tell this vision to anyone, the transfiguration was a vision, Moses and Elijah were not there. If they were there Jesus would not be the Firstfruits of them that slept. They were given a glimpse of the kingdom of God, Mark 9:1
Could God transport Enoch or anyone else into the future? I'm sure He has that kind of power. There are thoughts of John may be one, John 21:22 and Revelation 10:11. I guess the only way to know is if we are still living when they show up and they say their names. My understanding, we can confuse other scripture like the vision of the transfiguration trying to answer a question we cannot be sure of the truth of the answer.

Revelation 11:3 And I will give power to My two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days[3 years and a half], clothed in sackcloth."
4 These represent the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks which stand before the Lord of the earth.
How can they stand before the Lord?, it's because they didn't die, they were transfigured, God just took them.
Now, how many have stood on earth, and stands before the Lord? Enoch we know,,, but God wouldn't let anyone bury Moses; the Devil hunts for his bones but could never find them.
Matthew 16:28 Verily I say unto you, There are some of those standing here, which shall by no means taste of death, till they may have seen the Son of man coming in His kingdom."
THE GLORY FORESHOWN, THE TRANSFIGURATION
Matthew 17:1 And after six days Jesus taketh Him aside Peter, and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,
2 And was transfigured [changed in form] before them:and His face did shine as the sun, and His raiment became white as the light.
3 And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elijah talking together with Him.
Since Moses, and EliJAH were seen transfigured on the mount with Jesus, and we know of only the three that were transfigured, Enoch, Moses, and Elijah, it's more than likely the two witnesses are they.
Never base anything scriptural on popular belief/theory, the two witnesses still have much to do! they play a key role in the end times. Their work is not done, their testimony is yet to come, Revelation 11:7-13
Yes, that is what the Hebrew says in Exodus 3:14, I will be what I will be, but in the very same verse, God says to tell the children of Israel I AM has sent me unto you. In Exodus 3:13, Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say unto me, What is His name? What shall I say unto them?
God's response was to tell them I AM has sent you. Jesus also claimed to be the I AM of the Old Testament. I do agree with you that there are so many different interpretations of who the I AM is. I'm not sure about 100, but if ours is different than those 100 scholars, I guess we can bump that number up to 102!

Scholars. Just an observation. Answers for the different denominations

When Jesus said to them "I AM," they went backward and fell to the ground. Could this have been the same voice and power of God they heard in Matthew Chapter 17, the voice of the great I AM that caused them to fall over?
Well, it was very powerful. All Jesus said in response was I AM, and they fell over backwards, all of them including Judas. But the funny part of this is that they must have got up because Jesus asks them the second time "Whom seek ye?"
Now if they had any sense at all, after what just happened to them, when Jesus asked the second time, "Who are you looking for," I would have said, "Never mind, He is not here!" I would have just turned around and gone the other way. Why is Jesus doing this? To show that He is in charge, to show His power, the same power that Peter, James, and John got to see at His transfiguration, the power of God Himself!
Matthew 17:1-8, the transfiguration of Christ is very powerful. They (Peter, James, and John) got to see something amazing. Verse 2 says that He was transfigured before them. A more accurate word would be transformed rather than transfigured. In fact, it is the Greek word where we get our English word metamorphosis from. He was completely changed in form and in substance. He was transformed before them. But notice His countenance: His face did shine as the sun; Notice His clothing: and his raiment with white as the light. So we are talking about transformation!
I agree that that alone should have been enough knock them over. It wasn't until verse 6 (As David mentions) that they fell over. They fell over once they heard the voice from heaven. But there was so much power and energy force there that would have knocked anyone over.
Now here is something I also find interesting. In John Chapter 19, we see this same power being demonstrated as we see in Matthew Chapter 17. When they came to arrest Jesus in the garden, and some historians say that there were at least 1,000 people that came to arrest Him. We know that Judas came with them because it was Judas that led them to this place where they could find Jesus.
But look what transpired. In Verse 4, Jesus says, "Whom seek ye?" Who are you looking for? Now this part is awesome. After they told Jesus who they were looking for, Jesus says, and please notice this because it is very different than any of the English translations. Jesus said unto them "I AM." He did not say I am He. He just said I AM (EGO EMI), the name of God in the Old Testament.

Let's look into Jesus' stress._._ he had known people were plotting to kill him, Matthew 17:22-23, Matthew 21:38, Mark 9:31, Luke 20:14, Luke 22:2, Jesus knew it was the religious hypocrites that were plotting instead of teaching the sheep (his beloved sheep) John 8:37, John 7:1,19,20 even calling him opposite of Christ, John 10:19,20,
Mark 10:34, here: Jesus even knew how & explained it. Isaiah 52, Psalms 22,
He knew he would be on public display, clothing taken from him, they would gamble for them: Psalms 22:18,19
Jesus knew he was being betrayed & even said go quickly, John 13:27,
Jesus knew the followers would scatter, anyone who loves those who depend on them in anyway never wishes to leave them, especially unprepared, afraid, in danger, alone, being pursued, John 17, John 10:11,12, Luke 12:4, Matthew 24:9,
Those are only some of the details. Extreme stress none of us have faced to that level. Hebrews 4:15,

If I happened to be that my understanding of the Bible is the same way these people you mentioned, I am actually glad I am not alone. The Book of Acts is an epistle written by Luke who recorded the Acts of the Apostles after Jesus Christ died. Before Jesus Christ died the 12 Apostles spent time with Jesus in His journey on earth from the time He was baptized in water by John the Baptist till He was crucified. So when I read Matthew, Mark , Luke, and John I noticed that most of them repeating the same event that happened, which I think it was very clever. But I noticed Luke would give more information. For example, Matthew 17:4, Mark 9:5, Luke.9:33. but Luke is the only one who wrote "not knowing what he said". I have noticed the pattern that Peter had always been rebuked by Jesus Christ in more than one occasion. So, when I read the Book of Acts Luke recorded the fulfillment of the 12 Apostles receiving the Holy Spirit. What a way to start the chapter with these words Acts 1:1. Then the selection of Mathias as "was numbered by the eleven apostles" Acts 1:26. I thought it was actually brilliant. They prayed and they casted lots. So Mathias was chosen still by man/ men. I pay attention to the detail just my nature as I was doing my own investigative way of studying facts. So chapter 2-4 the apostles continued about their work witnessing who Jesus was, whom they crucified; as well as doing great wonders filled with the Holy Spirit with great power; and a lot of people believed and baptized by water, the way the 12 apostles knew how to be saved. But take note of Acts 1:5, Peter will have a remembrance of this verse when he met with Cornelius and others, the Gentiles in Acts 10 and repeated in chapter 11 ( Acts 10:47; Acts 11:16). Going back to chapter 5 the apostles were in battle with the high priests Sadducees because the apostles ought to follow God. Now there is this man a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law in Acts 5:34. cont
Imagine; if you can the God of the Universe and beyond time itself humbled to live; breathe and die as a man. He truly suffered as our High Priest; but didn't sin. ( 1 Peter 4:1-2; Hebrews 4:14-16). He was able to know the hearts of all men; hence didn't need to analyze whether they would be responsive or not to the Word and therefore spoke things in light of that based on whoever He was addressing. However; specific rebuke toward individuals was focused on His Disciples; most notably Peter with the famous statement "get behind me Satan." ( Matthew 16:23; Mark 8:33). This was shortly after His statement that Peter's understanding of His being the Son of God was only revealed from God ( Matthew 16:17). There was no misunderstanding in the demon world when they were cast out as to who Christ was. He therefore was operating in the Spirit realm; and based all His conversations and actions on those efforts.
There are unsaid things as well. When the deaf and dumb demon was cast out; Jesus told His disciples in the midst of others that prayer and fasting were necessary to carry out that particular deliverance ( Matthew 17:19-21). This would indicate Christ's preparation for that event along with other times He had reasons to be up well before dawn and late at night with prayer. Knowledge was not necessary but reliance on the Holy Spirit above; and trust in God throughout the process. Since He is our High Priest; he willingly gave up doing anything in His own Divinity so He could be an example of how we are to live trusting entirely on God in our limited state. He still needs to be seen because of having the "Spirit without measure" ( John 3:34). Not acting is as much an example of God's character as actions; when we see that Christ's Divinity would have allowed access to more than 12 legions of angels; which could undoubtably have destroyed everyone at the crucifixion.
Who and why are they called the two witnesses?
Lord Jesus took Peter, James and John to a high mountain and He was transfigured before them and then Moses and Elijah was talking with Him ( Mat 17:3). These two witnesses had to see the Lord Jesus physically on the earth so when they return to the earth, they will testify about Him ( Rev 11:7) and turn the heart of the fathers to the children and the heart of the children to the father ( Malachi 4:5-6) in the first half of the tribulation period when they will appear on the holy mount. They all witnessed the voice of the heavenly Father speaking to them, that this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased and listen to Him.
These two were the ones who were given the power for the fire to come down, ( 2Kings 1:10) stop the rain, ( 1Kings 17:1) turn the water into blood. ( Exodus 7:20) They are the two candlesticks having the olive branches by their side emptying the golden oil out of themselves for they are the two anointed ones that stand by the Lord Jesus ( Zech 4:11-14) to testify about Him and restore all things as Jesus said. ( Mat 17:11)
Many say that Enoch and Elijah will come again.
They were taken up to heaven and will come back again and then be killed and after three and a half, Spirit of life from God will enter them and then go to heaven. Well in the time of Jesus many died and rose from the dead again, Mary's brother Lazarus ( John 11:43) the widow's son who rose from the coffin, ( Luke 7:15) Dorcas ( Acts 9:40) and the daughter of the synagogue ruler, ( Mark 5:42) yet they also had a second death in their old age. For then Moses and Elijah will die again and be resurrected again for the Spirit of life will enter them and they will go to heaven. ( Rev 11:11-12)
Sometimes people & Church congregations fast for closeness with GOD, to feel HIS presence, & clarity on direction from GOD: Matthew 9:15, Mark 2:19,20, Luke 5:34,35, Ezra 8:21,23, Nehemiah 1:4, Nehemiah 1, (in context.), Daniel 9:2-3, 2Corinthians 6:4,5

I believe there are too many scriptures about power in fasting, direction, deliverance & repentance to think lightly of.

But it might be a word or something like "jump in the ocean" or something like that. But it was perhaps a picture of what was expected of someone who would follow Jesus. They did not yet know that Jesus would eventually hang on the cross. So they probably thought these were cruel words. He complained about it often, you know. For example, how long will I endure with you? Matthew 17:17
The disciples were taught by the Lord so they knew He had His words. Many also left Him, because the word became too difficult and understand. As in John 6:41-49

Jesus gave instruction, I'm not aware of scripture in the Psalms specified for that. But David who is accredited as author of many of the Psalms written in the Bible, was able to have an evil spirit leave Saul, by playing music. 1Samuel 16, however this seems different, because note: 1Samuel 16:14, 1Samuel 15, note 1Samuel 15:23,
