Good Afternoon, Bro Dan. I agree with you wholly. The Bible writings include many different literary genre's. I f someone is unsure whether the bible passage is meant to be taken in a way other than literally, then they can use the internet to get help with that from reputable Bible scholars.

But we know that some will not do so, trusting their own fallen minds and hearts and saying these are being led by the Spirit and they don't need anyone else to help them understand the Scripture.

Also, You and I and most likely others know that when Paul was talking about the letter killing in 2 Corinthians 3:6, he was talking about the O.T. Law (verses 3-11 to read the quoted Scripture by Alex in context) which condemns all of us because we have all broken this law, therefore bringing the penalty of sin on us, which is death.

Paul was not speaking of the written words of Scripture in both the O.T. and the N.T., otherwise the Scriptures that record the words of our Savior, Jesus, would be lethal, too, but He said that His Words are Spirit and Life ( John 6:63). We know this is not true. And we know that those who say that Paul was referring to the written words (letters) of Scripture kills are using this illogical view as a smokescreen to excuse themselves from refutation and to give creedance to the erroneous way they interpret much of Scripture as being allegorical, prophetic, and illustrative of deeper, hidden meanings and the way they mish-mash isolated Scriptures together, spattered with their erroneus interpretations to create a narrative that (like you said) rarely makes sense, is illogical, and does violence to the actual God-inspired Words He had the writers write with the context and genres He directed them to write.

Not a sin if in moderation, which to me means minimal. I believe things God intended for us which are good can be abused and used to harm ourselves or others and that is sin. Food = can be used for obesity, feed additions, or idolatry. Money = can be abused and used for greed, coveting, idolatry, etc. Sex intended within confines of one lifelong marriage can become adultery, fornication, lust, etc.

Some things are like playing with fire, with very little benefit with an enormous downside risk. People know their own temperaments and weaknesses for whether some are appropriate for them to dabble with.

I realize there are parables, allegories, and metaphor's intertwined in the bible. But for the most part, there are also logical and literal explanations for most. When Jesus spoke in parables he also took His time to explain the logical meaning of the parables so that we can understand the meanings - in the literal sense! Correct? God wants us to understand His Word!

The book of Revelation is a good example of these allegories, of which you speak. We really can't hope to decipher the exact meaning of each of the Apocalyptic revelations, or the bizarre imagery, and symbolic representations of reality, but we can "literally interpret" some of it. Example: in reading Revelations we know that God is going to end this earth as we currently know it - and He has said he will create New Heavens and Earth. So if we are to believe God Words, then we are believing this literally - Correct?

When we start trying to read between the lines, emphasizing some scripture, and discarding other scripture, and molding the scripture to mean something that we "secretly envision", "seeing hidden meanings" that's taking a path that can lead to confusion, including distorting the bible scripture that would inevitably render the scriptures meaningless for most people to understand.

Lastly, I believe the Bible is God's Word to us, and He meant His Words to be believed by us - literally and completely.

In genesis 1;27 the bible states God made mankind and instructed them to multiply. In Genesis chapter 2 he created Adam and Eve. There were humans before Adam and Eve?

If God abhors evil and is always against it then why does Isaiah 45:7 state, "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things." Kathy, that is a very good question. I do not know of a Scripture verse that speaks to this. But i do think that when we get to heaven we will understand more fully how right and just God's judgments are for each individual person. We may be aware that one we loved is not in heaven with us. Rather, they are spending eternity in hell. However, I think when we realize how wonderful our God is we will understand and agree that those who rejected Him just cannot be with Him for eternity and that God indeed does what He has told us He will do. He is true to His Word, promises to those who believe, and proclamations of judgment upon all who refuse to believe in Him.

Our God is the most necessary, valuable, and desirable Being for any of us. Without Him we would not be. For those who have rejected Him, eternal separation from Him is the deepest grief and suffering one can ever experience. But, Hallelujah, to those who are reconciled to Him, He is the greatest treasure and pleasure we could ever know. He is worthy of all of our love, devotion, and praise! In this life, we who believe have a foretaste of Him, but in heaven we will be completely satiated and satisfied in Him.

Amen. I agree with much that you have stated here in this thread.

I believe that we should all agree, that the Bible is God's Word, and I believe we are to read the words literally. Another good reason to read the bible in a literal manner is because Jesus Christ took it literally. From time to time, Jesus quotes directly from the OT. When Jesus was tempted by Satan in Luke 4, he answered using quotes from the OT., God's commands in Deuteronomy 6:13, 8:3, are literal, and Jesus used them in this manner.

So, if Jesus shows us in scripture that He took the bible literally, I believe we should too!

There are no giants today! Diane by no means do you put up with abuse of any kind. You are a child of GOD, a Christian; not a 2nd class citizen and Christians should never let anyone walk on them. In Mathew 18:15-:20 you admonish them showing them the error of their way and if they don't ask for forgiveness and repent than rebuke them and set them aside ( Romans 16:17). That means don't hang out with them, putting yourself through any chance for abuse, don't hate them but be pleasant like it doesn't bother you, live your life as a Christian who will be blessed. When they see how good your life is, then they will want it too. These people you are talking about do not sound like Christians to me, if they were they would not abuse. Therefore you do not put up with them but put them aside until/if they have a change of heart. Yes love your enemies if they have turned from their ways and accepted CHRIST. Talk to them and tell them how you feel if that does no good then live in peace and harmony knowing their sin is not on you. 2 Thessalonians 3:6-:14 Luke 17:3,4. Someone has to ask for forgiveness to receive it. When that happens they must repent and have a complete change of heart, making a commitment to never do it again. You are under no obligation to forgive one that does not come to you and ask. But for your own health, in your own heart it is better that you do and move on, because it will turn to hate and bitterness where the devil will sneak in.

Hello Donya. I wasn't sure to what level you wanted to go to for an explanation, hence my brief reply. I suppose your dialogue with that enquiring student has now long ended, but if you're still interested in more material on Sanctification, I would add the following:

As mentioned, 'sanctify' means 'to set apart'; having the same root as 'saint and holy'. For the believer, sanctification is generally seen in three aspects.

a. Positional Sanctification. The believer been set apart by his position in God's family. This is so of every true believer regardless of his spiritual condition because this concerns his spiritual state not his present condition (remember 1 Corinthians 6:11 was read by largely carnal Christians). This sanctification is based on Christ's Death as seen in Hebrews 10:10.

b. Experiential Sanctification. Since we have been set apart, we are to be increasingly set apart from the flesh & world in our daily experience ( 1 Peter 1:14-16). So when 'spiritual growth' is spoken about & expected in believers, it is this progressive & experiential aspect of the sanctifying work that should be our continual aspiration.

c. Future Sanctification. Also referred to as 'completed redemption'. We believe that the redemption we now have in Christ is complete in its work before God & in our lives (in the matter of release of sin's penalty & grip). Likewise, our future redemption or sanctification implies that their full meaning can only be grasped when our 'position & practise' comes into full & perfect accord when we see Jesus, raised to be with Him, & become as He is ( 1 John 3:1-3; Ephesians 5:26,27; Jude 1:24,25): This is our Redemption/Sanctification completed. Hope this 'extra' will assist you for the future.
