We see here the beginnings of recorded cunning or slyness in the serpent, which carries through later in deception, corruption, etc. Per pervasive corruption in Afghanistan etc., I wonder the influence of its much respected cunning on its common and institutionalized corruption, its ancient and biblical cultural origins. The substitution of second-born sons to inherit from dying dads in Genesis. Ulysses’ cunningness. Chaucer’s Pardoner. Of course, we have similar challenges in the west – just think of President Clinton lying under oath and parsing his comments to dissuade Congressional candidates, Vice President Spiro Agnos, President Richard Nixon and Watergate cover up, President Lyndon Johnson and Robert McNamara Vietnam war lies, Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich selling of Obama’s Senatorial seat, UK PM scandals, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert real estate scandal, the governor of New York Eliot Spitzer and US Secretary of State for Development (USAID Administrator) Randy Tobias scandals, President Ronald Reagan making up stories to prove a morale point, Bernard Madoff scandal, Martha Steward insider trading, sinking of The Main to liberate the Philippines from Spain, etc. We don’t see much of Honest Abe Lincoln anymore. So what happened? Might be useful research area with modern practical applications.

Is it reasonable to assume that the serpent had wings, before he was cursed to slither on his belly?
  • Jimmy on Genesis 3:9 - 15 years ago
I love how God asks a question to something that he already know the answer to. I apply the same technique towards my son :)

NOOOOOOOO! WHYYYYYYY?! At least eat from the tree of life, before the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

There are some questions that we need to ask;:
    1. What was God's reasoning for having Adam name the beasts of the field?
    2. How did Adam decide what to name them? What did he compare them to? What did he draw from? Maybe his own earthy nature? Some beast were clean and some were not. Man and beast were both of the ground.
    3. So, if being that he named the serpent; what was Eve really communicating with. Maye her own conscience?
1st Tim 2:13,14 Remember Eve did not name the beast of the field Adam did.

the serpent does not talk to eve, he talks to woman ,the one who is presented as having the ability to give names does not give but the name eve to his "wife" (after ). this must be clearly understood in order that you understand that of names ie. abram - abraham , jacob - israel , jew's - jew's ,this last example being much misunderstood. there are the jew's tied to the council ( priest's ) and the jew's tied to the diciples and the faithfull (the sheepfold ).

In Genesis 3:20 it says that Eve was the mother of all living. I have heard of the theory of a "first creation " in the first chapter of Genesis and respectfully submit that since the Bible is silent on that subject that we should not speculate. Later on, before the Mosaic laws are given out, we read of other Bible couples that would seem to be incestuous, Abram married to his half sister Sarai ( Genesis 20:12,) their son Isaac married to a cousin, Rebekah ( Genesis 24, 25,) their son Jacob (Israel) married to cousins Leah and Rachel. We have to remember that Adam and Eve were perfectly created beings so the gene pool was perfect; as sin entered the world over time man's genes became less perfect. By the time Moses' law came around, God made it clear to His people that he wanted the practice of in-family sexual relationships to cease. God is good! Hope this helps, Trent, or anyone else interested in this subject:)

In chapter -1- we have God , in chapter -2- we have The Lord God and his Commandment, it is also inclusive that" woman" is of The Lord God. Moving into chapter -3- we have the serpent vs. GOD and what God said ,by driving a wedge the serpent has brought" The Lord " and what he say's , speaks ,saith , or hath spoken to be found in many books of the Holy Bible . example (Exek-22:28)" saying thus saith the Lord God when the Lord hath not spoken. Guess who > the serpent <.

the serpents comment "you shall be as gods" can be considered as referring to eve only, not adam. as in "you {eve} shall be as gods {are}"
  • John walker on Genesis 3 - 16 years ago
it is quite interesting that we only have the word of eve to the serpent to suggest that woman was ever forbidden the fruit of the tree of knowlege of good and evil. Man was blatantly forbidden, but not so the woman! lol

Verse 22 answer for Dylan. Us includes Father (God), Son (Gods only Son) and Holy Ghost (Spirit of God. This truth is revealed by God to his children born of his Spirit through his word, by faith and by his Spirit.

Thanks for providing the means to read scripture online. I came here to read the KJV bible account of Genisis3:5 where Satan tells the 1st recorded lie in history when he tells Eve that she will not die despite God's command that to eat fruit of the tree would cause death. Eve, and the sin of all humans after her, involves believing the Devil's lie that humans should decide for themselves what is right and what is wrong.Humans were created by God to exercise each his own free will, but only God has the authority to decide what is right or wrong. Never were God's human creation meant to function in the world absent the guidance of and wisdom of God.

How can 3 versions of the bible (KJ, NIV, & The Message) all say the same thing; woman will desire for their husband, and the NLT says that woman desired to control her husband?

it's interesting that god and his men share the same attributes. God walking in the garden.
  • Dylan on Genesis 3 - 16 years ago
And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us.

I would like to know what this means. US? This passage suggests that God isnt just one being. This suggestion also being before the appearance of the holy ghost. I dont understand.

We must belive on whatever god would say whether it will asffect us , for he is our creator and we have no rigt to disbelive him or we will be like satan, disbeliving gods command.God has given us our life ,surely he has the right to take it back in any way he wish.

I don't believe when God said that they would surely die that he meant physically die, but rather they would no longer be live in the perfection of the Lord
  • Ryan on Genesis 3 - 16 years ago
Wait...So Satan was a serpent or did he take the form of a serpent? If he took the form of a serpent than why punish the serpents to "crawl on their belly" since Satan was not "really a snake" If serpents are cursed to crawl on their belly then what was their original design? How does a serpent talk?
  • Trent on Genesis 3:5 - 16 years ago
The strange thing about Satan's temptation is the comments were partly true. The tree was called the 'knowledge of good and evil'- which indicates that knowledge comes from it, and he was right in that Adam and Eve would have greater awareness of good and evil. It probably is a characteristic of Gods, but it may be a stretch to say it makes them 'as Gods'. And previous, when Satan says 'You shall not surely die', contradicting God, the only thing correct about Satan's comment is that it didn't happen immediately. Adam and Eve died later, but not right away. Then there's the possibility of the afterlife, which I don't know if it was offered to Adam and Eve back then or not.
