Ive gotten married and cant come.no doubt he accepted the invatation according to tradition.to he invited to a banquet was a great call to attend seems if he truly wanted to go he would have made an effort to bring his wife.but it seem an excuse is what he needed to not attend how many will not heed to the invatation god gives for heaven.many are called but few are chosen.all are invited but many wont come because. With the invatation comes responsibility to follow christ

Being a Follower and disciple of Jesus Christ, We must possess the character that Jesus has. And it is not hard to do that if we really know who we are. God created us in His IMAGE and LIKENESS..it is built in to us that we POSSESS the CHARACTER that Jesus also had.....just READ the Bible and Have Faith and Pray to God..and no doubt He will Give us Understanding and Wisdom.,,,God Bless

verse 27, the cross that the followers of Jesus bear is the prayer that connects with the spirit of God. Prayer enables people to continue with faith in Jesus. Our earthy bodies are composed of elements that age and eventually die crumbling into dust. Our physical bodies contain our thoughts, our life energy, that is our life being. But this life being dies with the mortal body as there is no longer a vessel to contain it. This life being, symbolically wine, will be put in a new vessel that will never perish. The mortal body will be given an immortal body. Through prayer and connection with Jesus this fragile, expendable life energy becomes powerful spiritual energy sustained by God. Gods will and plan for man to have eternal life in love, peace and joy is a spiritual energy that is the power of the Holy Spirit. When we pray opening our mind to the divine guidance, including baptism, of Jesus then we are granted the Divine life from God which is the source of all life. Jesus died on the cross, causing it to become symbolically our tree of eternal life. Man must bear his cross realizing there is no life after the death of the body except with the resurrection of Jesus. Sharing this knowledge is building the church. Harmony in this thought and prayer builds goodwill with others and a solid foundation of love for all mankind to receive the grace of God. "According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation. " - 1 Corinthians 3.10

The way I understand verse 26 connects with the way I understand verse 27, i.e. Jesus is talking of the sinful nature of man. He has already told us to "honor " our parents so verse 26 cannot contradict this and I do know the "cross " we are to carry is our sinful nature. Thus, it only makes sense He is talking about that part of man, i.e. the carnal minded one, that is out of harmony with a spiritual life.

The person who can not part with his belonging can not be a disciple of Christ. In some countries there is so much emphasis put on material things. However, Jesus Christ was described as not having a place to lay his head. It 's hard to not become attached to material possessions, especially when they provide so much comfort. This scripture helps to keep in mind the place of material things. They can not save when in a crisis.

The Letter killeth the Spirit keepeth alive. The word is not enough alone. The Holy Spirit will guide you. common sense ALMOST every time. Common sense says God does NOT want me to hate my parents. However for some it is a knee jerk reaction to reject any association of the word Hate with GOD. As if He couldn 't or wouldn 't. He can He does. God Hates just as passionately as He loves. i.e.Romans Chap.1 He is a God capable of eternal love forgivness He is a God capable of Wrath Judgment. To leave out this attribute is a dangerous mistake that can lead to destruction. He is not a one dimensional God.

God doesnt want us to " hate " anyone as we understand hate. The word " hate "in biblical form means to love less. Why would God say honor your father and mother then tell you to hate them? That wouldnt make any sense. God wants to be first and He is supposed to be as the Creator full of love mercy and grace none of which we deserved. Love your neighbor as yourself but put God first! Blessins!!!

After we are told to surrender all we have to Jesus, we still have something to give, our very lives verse 26 27 . Being a disciple of Christ is not easy. The cost is very great. If we want to be truly found in him, we have to pay the price. We have to be willing to lay our lives and all we have on the altar. Whatever it takes, Lord let me be ready to give. Anything just to be found in you. "I surrender all I surrender all All to thee My blessed saviour I surrender all. " Amen.

I have seen many places where there are comments on How God can say to hate . Over the years many words used in Biblical times meanings are different than those we believe them to be in now "modern times ". God says to hate those in your family in verse 26.From what I have learned and studied God is most likely saying is to "love those less than you love God , If God is not the 1st love in your heart you can not be a disciple and follower of God. God should be 1st in everyone 's hearts, then family such as spouse , children, friends etc. When God is 1st in our lives he will guide us along the path he has chosen for us, he knows what our days are before they happen, he knows who we will care for and he tells us let him guide us believe fully on him and we will be part of his kingdom. He chapter 12 verse 30 he says seek ye 1st the kingdom of God and these things will be added onto you and in verse 34 of that chapter , it says where your treasure is, that is where your heart is. God will give us all the treasures he feels we deserve if he is our 1st love.. Thank you

To the western mind these are feeble excuses but to the eastern mind they are justifiable reasons for declining the invitation Eastern religious custom very strictly adhered to dictated that the first two dedicate their property and animals before putting them to use The third man by marriage customs was not allowed to accept a meal invitation from anyone but his parents or in laws for the first year of marriage The lesson here is not so simple as just not giving lame excuses It is that even apparently righteous excuses are less than sufficient reason for declining an invitation to dine with the Master Note that the audience of this parable includes Pharisees a group so convinced of their own righteousness that they did not even recognize the Messiah standing before them

I feel this verse is saying that those who separate themselves from the world, or change some bad habits, but don't die daily and become fruitful are neither fit for the world, or for the Lord's use either. You have to put him first always!

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

Can you understand what he is saying? Would you be able to be one of Jesus disciples?

Unless you have suffered, been ridiculed and hated you can't understand what he is talking about.

    He is telling the truth!

I believe Jesus is saying ( Luke 14:27) that we must put God first in our lives and we must serve God in His name. We must love and help others around us. We must do as Jesus did and fulfill our purpose.
  • John on Luke 14:26 - 11 years ago
This is just my opinion. Could possibly mean: hate the way they / we are "of the worldly ways of living" because they / we will not consider ever inviting someone who is poor, blind, cripple, etc... to a wedding, etc., because we want to gain a social status amongst the many of higher living. One must first change to love all; not just, someone of higher living abilities. This is cost of being a disciple! Or, just being a good friend to someone / anyone; that, which they / we today lack. We do not want our associates looking down on us! On the flip side of this issue; who wants to be friends with criminals or terrorist or rapist or etc.. So, something must change our reality or way of life. My friends that is what Jesus was / would / will / is teaching us. He was / is telling us how to stop the madness of neglect. Please share! Basis necessities, things needed to be able to survive is what many lacked then and now (today). We know this to be true! Flip side of this: we may be too many in numbers / populations to maintain enough resources for everyone?! True or False?!

To carry your cross means to endure whatever your mission in life is. My twin brother and my siters and my parents are all unbelievers . But really what I have had to endure the most is Christians. They are my cross to bear. I have never suffered more that at the hands of Christians. I have been kicked out of churches, banned from discusions, black listed and persecuted for telling the truth. How do you feel when you read my words?
  • Farzana on Luke 14:26 - 11 years ago
Its quite difficult to follow Jesus.
because He is the first in our lives to come, but some times we don't feel that,we want ourselves or our parents.
  • Sigmund Ivarsson on Luke 14 - 11 years ago
If any man is not willing to forsake his family for the sake of the kingdom he is not worthy. Jesus did this and if you do this your family will say why do you hate us but God says seek first the kingdom and all these things will be added onto you. It is a matter of setting your priorities first. If you walk away from your church or get kicked out for the sake of the kingdom you will be shunned but when the kingdom comes all things will be restored to you. He who loses his life gains it back in the kingdom. It is love to restore the kingdom which is the new age after the church age. The kingdom of God is inside you. No excuses.
