  • T. Robinson Ahlstrom on Psalms 84 - 11 years ago
This is the homecoming Psalm. For this one pilgrim, the LORD 's house has always been the sweetest place. In my boyhood, life was sometimes difficult, but the preaching of God 's word was an anchor of hope and a rock of salvation. I would wait 167 hours each week to go off to that old church and hear God 's word on the 168th. The pastor was a plain man brilliant and devout. His sermons were logic on fire. All my life the sober words and sweet songs of that place have carried me along. Privileged to study at the world 's greatest universities, I gained no wisdom from them like the lessons I learned there. Blessed to taste all the world 's high culture, I have found no beauty or excellency to match the sweet saraband of those hymns. There were true saints in that place, in whose weathered faces I discovered what it meant to be a man. Take the whole world and give me Jesus. Let me run to the house where is name is ever blessed.
