"And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month."
The Spirit quote specifically this phrase 'my bone and my flesh' out of the rather voluble expressions of an Oriental reception, which is formal and is bound by flourishes of gestures,- bowings and scrapings are part of it, is to evoke the creation of Eve. Adam referred to the God of Jacob when he used it while Laban is referring to God of Nahor which are quite different things. In Ch.31 we read of a covenant Jacb and Laban makes and "The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us."(31.53) In the heart of Jacob was fortified by faith in the Living God while Laban's god was in objects which later shall manifest as teraphim and golden calf at Bethel and Dan. The same God marked by the compound number 12. We came across the progeny of Nahor. (Gen.22.20-24) Laban had set up his family gods so he could go on bamboozling Jacob without any prick of conscience. These gods became a bone of contention between them. Jacob refers to it, "Thus have I been twenty years in thy house; I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed my wages ten times./Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. God hath seen mine affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee yesternight." (31.41-42) Jacob refers what his God can do that God of Nahor cannot. This precisely explains the heresy of 'prosperity theology' and rascals who hoodwinks gullible widows and grand old ladies have their family gods in dollars and crypto. But God shall avenge their victims. From very close experience this writer can testify how God has caught these villains by their own traps. When God reclaimed, my old age became the most satisfying period of life. This is the Lord's doing. (Ps.118.23)
