3-5 speaks to the eunuchs, those that could call themselves a broken branch, since they could have no off-spring in a society firmly based upon family. There are historical sources about those, and they could often be found in the courts as advisors of the rulers, since they did not have children and therefore did not threaten the order of the dynasty.
