I have an opinion about the identity of the seven churches. I have followed the teachings of the Seventh Day Adventists who have a strong tendency to teach the visions of their prophetess Ellen White, who received visions via a spirit which identified itself as the "Spirit of Prophecy." I believe this spirit to be "Jezebel" ( Rev. 2:20) deceiving God's servants to "commit fornication and eat things sacrificed to idols." Seventh Day Adventists abstain from drinking wine, tend toward vegetarianism and other dietary changes from what God teaches. Following the teachings, ideas, suggestions or commandments of the Spirit of Prophecy, opposing God's laws is "fornication" in God's eyes. All this while at the same time, the works of the SDA church clearly resemble those listed in verse 19 (love, service, faith, patience, and increasing works). Most other Christian denominations have much to learn from the Adventists on how to fulfil God's love through works, and the Adventists would be well advised to read and study the Bible for what it says, instead of relying on the visions given by the self proclaimed "Spirit of Prophecy."
Sardis is also easily identified today because the church which received the truth at the begining but changed everything around to the point that is no longer "alive" is by far the largest Christian denomination today. The Catholic Church, after receiving God's truth from the apostle Peter himself, went on to change God's Sabbath for Sunday; God's Holy Days for pagan festivals; baptism by immersion for sprinkling; modifying the 10 commandments to allow the worship and veneration of Mary, saints, and Jesus through the use of statues and other idols. This is actually the reason why God tells them they are "dead", and counsels them to go back to the original gospel ( Rev. 3: 1-3).
All the works of the messages to the seven churches can be seen among Christian denominations today, and I agree with the previous comment that we are responsible to identify the true works of the particular denomination we follow and repent accordingly.
