    Trusting God vs trusting self.

There is something to be said for wisdom that comes from above in guiding our decisions; if anything simply trusting the Word of God on certain things like guidance on money ( Proverbs 10:2 on "ill gotten gains"; Proverbs 20:21 warns of a quickly received inheritance that is spent rapidly and or unwisely reminding us of the story of the son who squandered his inheritance in Luke 15.)

Similar things can be said for other basic issues in life such as behaviors that enhance or disrupt marriages and other family relations; as well as the general counsel not to trust in themselves. Proverbs 3:5-6 warns us about not leaning on our own understanding.

The difficulty comes in the seemingly mundane actions that the saved and unsaved perform every day. At least we USED to assume a standard indicative of verses like 2 Thessalonians 3:10 which interestingly enough was apparently repeated by Lenin (an avid atheist) but for some odd reason is missing from the far left today. Go figure. When we look at work; assuming that we are not a total criminal for a living (not to be the case as much today in society); we can certainly see how those who are highly skilled; making a "name for themselves" in the world as well as very rich can be much more likely to be caught up in their own accomplishments and status. What would be considered a disaster for them (i.e. having to do manual labor because of mental decline or their company folding) would be to many a cause of rejoicing who are struggling to survive. Such perspective of individuals inevitably squews (however you spell it) our viewpoint. Our natural affections are self centered as well as many of our personal dislikes. The Spirit must be renewing the inner man daily and those who are saved have access to this sanctification. There is ALWAYS contention between the Spirit and the flesh; it may lie dormant but sin is always present as long as we are in these mortal bodies ( Romans 7:24).

I am studying in Luke Chapter 14 and would like to share something I've come to realize about God's humbling process. Luke 14:11 says, "For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

This word "abased" is the word humbled in the Greek text. This is quote from Proverbs 3:34 and it is used quite extensively through the entire New Testament. Peter has probably the best presentation of this in 1 Peter 5:5.

Peter quotes Proverbs 3:34 "For whosoever exalts themselves shall be humbled, and whosoever should humble themselves shall be exalted." In the very next verse, 1 Peter 5:6, it says, "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God."

Now, this looks like it is saying we are to humble ourselves, but as I am comparing this with the original language of scripture, the phrase "Humble yourselves" is what is called a Passive Voice, which means the subject (the believer) is not told to do the action, but rather the subject (believer) is to receive the action.

So, it is literally "be humbled," not the believer doing the humbling, but the believer submitting to the humbling that is coming to you. As I look at what the text says, "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God," it is not telling me to humble myself, but to submit myself to God's humbling process.

Peter is saying that God's mighty hand is coming upon us to humble us, that is, bring us low. We are to submit to it!

    Human wisdom and Godly wisdom.

We see a lack of wisdom of any ssort these days as we continue to increase in knowledge exponentially (shades of Daniel 12:4). In one sense; we cannot rely on our own understanding ( Proverbs 3:5-6) but on God alone. There are certain principles whether of law; crops; finances or other things which all those under the sun are embarked in to one degree or another with whatever freedoms God allows. We certainly cannot operate against human wisdom or our conscience when we don't do something we know we are supposed to do ( James 4:17). As with anything else there are extremes we should try to avoid. Christ; for instance when He was on earth told those He sent forth two by two not to bring much along with them ( Mark 6:8); but later once He was preparing for His departure the instruction changed ( Luke 22:36). This included money; clothes and a weapon for protection from thieves. We have two major things that we need to avoid; the first being seeking things for ourselves outside the will of God or trying to "help God" by speeding up the process. Having the understanding that everything belongs to God and that we take nothing into this world and cannot take anything out helps a great deal ( 1 Timothy 6:7). The second thing is not laying down our life for the Lord. At the extreme this would be martyrdom; but everyday tests where we choose to serve others above our own desires we "die a little" bit at a time as we carry our cross daily. Things like marriages of course can be a major factor and in some cases individuals who can remain chaste can be in unique advantages for unfettered service toward the Lord. Again; as with anything else I have seen more than enough Godly Christian marriages where more than sufficient attention is paid to the wife and children along with a generous amount of time dedicated to corporate worship; prayer; evangelism and small group studies. Being equally yoked of course works this out best.

    Ddjot,

Chris gave a good answer, I'd like to add to the discussion. Please note the verse right before, Jeremiah 29:11, Jeremiah 29:10, sometimes we want GOD to change our situations "right now", sometimes HE does, but I believe this promise, is for GOD's people when we need the encouragement for the troubled times & endurance in longer seasons. Notice in Daniel, he & his companions had went through many difficult moments but GOD in miraculous ways delivered them, protected them & even encouraged them. I believe it was after Daniel was thrown in the lions den that he fasted & humbly prayed about the promise made in Jeremiah 29:10,11, Daniel 9:1,2,3, still waiting on that promise of 70 years,

note Daniel 6:1,2,3, (for why I place the timing, seemingly after lions den) the noted scriptures referring to about Daniel's encouragement, & companions, some say "the greater the trial the greater the miraculous": Daniel 1:8,9,17, Daniel 2:12,13,17,23 Daniel 3:12-27, Daniel 4:19,24,25, Daniel 5, Daniel 6:7,10,16,22,28, Daniel 9:23, Daniel 10:11,12,18, Daniel 11:1,

Luke 10:19, there are moments that are painful but when we look at Salvation, the pruning, witness to strengthen the Body of Believers, then we realize it didn't "hurt us".

    I hope these scriptures give you strength & hope= 1Peter 4:12,13, 2Corinthians 1:3-7, John 15:1-2, 1Corinthians 4:5, 2Corinthians 3:2, Zechariah 13:9, Malachi 3:3, 2Timothy 2:10, Psalms 30:5,

    In correction= Isaiah 48:10,11, Malachi 3:2, Proverbs 3:11-35, Hebrews 12:7, 2Thessalonians 1:4,

Endure even undue trials= 2Timothy 2:3, 2Timothy 4:5, remember Timothy was with Paul in ministry during persecution. 1Peter 2:19, Mark 13:13, James 5:10,11,

    James 5:13-18, 2Chronicles 7:14,

Hopefully these are helpful & encouraging

Praise the LORD for all on this forum. It is great to read of all the comments and different view points and the general discussions. This particular chapter brings to mind of our own peculiar circumstances now in 2022. No matter what we are going through, the LORD knows who each and every one of us are in HIM.

When we come out of it, as the children of Israel did come out of Egypt, we will be numerous and "spiritually" wealthy in then LORD JESUS CHRIST. I am encouraged to watch my LORD work on our behalf, as we carry out HIS commission. Matthew 28: 18-20; John 15:7,8; 1 John 5:14

May our leaders find mercy, grace and faith in GOD'S salvation and lean on HIS wisdom and direction. Proverbs 3: 3-13

Let us stand together in CHRIST our LORD and pray diligently for the peace of Jerusalem as well our own nation. Ps 122:6; 1 Timothy 2:1-4

GOD to shine HIS face on all who worship and praise HIS Holy Name.

Ephesians 6-The full armor of God

No passage can be isolated and read alone in scripture; without at least being seriously short as to its full meaning. Ephesians 6 is no exception. It is therefore; no coincidence that the previous chapter discusses the family unit as an example of the structure of the church as well as the rest of the book the concepts of heavenly places.

Verse 9; albeit particularly controversial in today's culture; discusses human masters and compares it to our Master in heaven. This is a key term; almost totally ignored among preachers and laypeople alike in reference to our Lord and Savior. I only know one brother who would routinely pray with that mindset which is truly a sad observation.

Verses 11 through 13 talk about standing in His might. We are reminded of Psalm 1:5 as to the state of the wicked in judgment; surely we also will fall if not fully grounded in the Word.

Verses 14 and 15 bring up both having the truth (as opposed to a false) as a mindset; with verse 15 being prepared to speak the gospel of peace (as we see in 2 Tim. 4:2).

Verse 16 on the shield of faith implies utilizing and TRUSTING in God to get us through all circumstances (see 1 Cor. 10:13; Proverbs 3:5-6). He is able to keep us out of temptations and is trustworthy.

Verse 17 shows us where our headship in Christ also protects us from fatal attack. The Word of God isn't exactly a surprise here as to the only offensive weapon; but greatly compromised among many who endeavor to preach the Gospel. We must meditate on it as well as know how to apply scripture in given situations as the Lord leads us to do ( Mark 13:11).

Verse 18 on gets to the last theme; prayer for the saints including Paul which shows that leadership needs to pray for laypersons and vice versa. This certainly is something that many churches need to address more fully ( James 5:16). I honestly don't know any pastors that have asked for prayer to preach more boldly.

Prov. 3:11-12 speaks to me differently.

"My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:

For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth".

Some troubles faced by us these days is as a result of lack of knowledge, which leads to punishment from our Lord and Creator because we have despised HIM.

However, these punishments should be seen as an act of chastening by God so that we become conscious and get back to the right path, of which we should not be weary of. In fact, he is only correcting us with such punishments mainly because he loves us - our Creator is a forgiving God.

Wow, where to begin? Space would not allow me to answer all your questions. First of all, always keep in mind that what Jesus suffered on the Cross was for everything that would happen to us. He took our suffering and shame upon His self. All your answers are in the Cross. Take all your burdens to the Lord and lay them at His feet. Only Jesus can give you His Peace and the understanding to carry you through it all. Read the Bible daily! Honestly, I think you should order a Expositor Study Bible from Jimmy Swaggart Ministry. That Bible will truly open up to you all the Truths. Jesus said, " I am the Way the Truth and the Life, no man cometh unto the Father but by Me". ( John 14:6) Another scripture is (Hebrew 13:5-6) " I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do". (Psa.34:19) Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all." Tell your friend to read Proverbs 3:16 and stand upon Gods Word. Trust and believe for He is the healer of all our suffering's. Jesus did it all at Calvary. We are to lean upon Him and His Living Word, the Bible. Amen.

In John 3, when Jesus was speaking to Nicodemas; He said we must be Born Again from Above. Then he explained the Holy Spirit who Jesus will send to us.

Jesus is the one who baptizes us with the Holy Spirit.

This matches with what is being said in Acts.

Water baptisms are a beautiful way to invite friends and family to witness in the flesh, what has happened in the Spirit. It's not mandatory.

I know I was baptized the night I was saved. I had been in the occult for years; so I had a big problem with demons; UNTIL I STARTED READING THE BIBLE, like my life depended upon it. One day I ordered all evil spirits to leave!! I asked God for angels to protect me and my son.

He answered that prayer. I read my Bible every day like it was food. It's been 37 years, traveling the road of ever increasing Faith. I don't doubt anything in scripture. Because Jesus Christ IS the Word.

    You're doing good.

Jesus christ told His deciples in Mattew 28:19 go to all the nations and make deciples of them Baptized them in the name of the Father and of the son and of the Holy Ghost. Which I think that is the wrong way of Baptizing a person using tides I think the right way of baptism in ithe Holy scripture in the Bible is in Act 2:38. When Peter said to the people around him he said Repent everyone of you and be Baptized in the Name of Jesus christ for the remassion of your sins. and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost because the promise is unto you and your children and those who are near or afar off and as many as the Lord our God shall call. Heavenly father, I ask that you provide a job suited for my needs this day. Lead me to a job that will accommodate me without hesitation.

You are the rock on which I stand.

I ask that You provide me with a job that is both stable and without shaky grounds.

I ask that my talents, skills, abilities and education will be put into practical use. That way, I can have sufficient to pay my bills, and place bread on my table for myself and my family. May I also be able to give back what is due to You, Father.

Lord, You command blessings upon me in my barns and in all that I put my hands to do, and You will bless me in the land which You give me.

Right now, I proclaim that I will receive many job opportunities that will allow me to perform at my best, remembering You in all that I do.

I speak that doors will be opened to me in every direction I turn, because Your light shines upon me.

I decree and declare that under-employment is of the past and a better job ahead is mine.

In Jesus's name I pray, Amen!

    Thelma Spangler,

I've experienced similar situations with " experienced contractors" that had really bad results. I've experienced much of that. Next time I think it may be wise for myself to inquire & require " high quality results " instead of " experienced ". I actually learned how to install my own carpet without stretching it. I had the carpet dealer cut the exact size for each room. When needed I would have it cut with extra length, for walkway, & closets, preventing seams. Then I would carefully cut those to fit as I layed it in place with a carpet knife. The " tact strip" nails alongside the walls grab carpet to lock in place. When the carpet weight is overwhelming I've had rooms clear, clean & ready to install & the carpet rolls delivered to each room. The carpet is much more manageable when opened & rolled out.

So it seems the main question is how to handle this situation as GOD fearing believers. After a bad job has been done.?

    1st prayer, Proverbs 3:6, Proverbs 11:5,

2nd don't withhold wages to the wage earner: Proverbs 3:27, Leviticus 19:13, Jeremiah 22:13, Malachi 3:5,

    3rd justice & judgement : Proverbs 3:27, Job 8:3, Proverbs 21:3, Ecclesiastes 5:8, Isaiah 56:1,

Is it justice to speak up, to inform others? I ask you to seek GOD's direction & discernment on these. I'm reminded of: Matthew 5,

    Hopefully these are helpful

Hello. I appreciate your desire for 'Godly' men and women to be put into positions of power; but I want to encourage you in something. God says this in His Word about looking to 'flesh' to help us--"This is what the LORD says: "Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind, who makes the flesh his strength and turns his heart from the LORD." ( Jeremiah 17:5).

When we get desperate, we will do 'anything' to find relief or help; it's human nature. Most if not all of us do that.

But it's dangerous. God also says in His Word, "Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless." Psalm 108:12.

WORTHLESS is the help of man. One more Scripture: "A song of ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain; unless the LORD protects the city, its watchmen stand guard in vain." Psalm 127:1.

Unless we look to GOD ALONE; then NOTHING we do will prosper; NOTHING will help.

And politics/politicians can never help; it's a corrupt system which corrupts even those who truly want to do good.

One more Scripture: "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from evil.

This will bring healing to your body and refreshment to your bones." Proverbs 3:5-8.

I feel for you; we are all struggling with all of the evil we see surrounding us. But Christ and He alone is our source for all things. Yes, God DOES use people; that's true; but we can't count of people to dig us out of trouble. Only repentance for our sins; turning to Christ; preaching The Gospel, only THOSE things will bring any good. "Bad" proliferates when Christians don't live and preach The Gospel; and live according to His Word and His will; otherwise; the wall of protection God has around us comes down and we are open to attacks. Live God's way; and we will be protected and helped by him. I hope this helps you. Take care.

Proverbs 3:5-6 " Trust j. The Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths

I too know what it's like to lose a wife, home, all monies. It's was one of the biggest trails of my life, but even though I was raised Christian, I was not truly saved. It took all these things to happen to me to get on my knees and ask the Lord to come into my heart. So, I lost everything of the earthly possessions and had to start over at a much older man, but I gained the greatest possession I could have ever obtained my salvation and spending eternal life with the one and only the Lord!

So, please keep on keeping on, and look up to the Lord. Greater is He that is within me, than he that's in the world.

My dear brother have Faith and trust in the Lord he will provide all you need. It is written in Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and He will make straight your paths. Take it one day at a time and through prayer and supplication, the Lord will make a way.

Hello John. First let me say that you will NOT fall through ANY cracks; though it MIGHT seem as though you are; because GOD SEES YOU; and HE LOVES YOU; and He will NEVER STOP loving you. People WILL sometimes not be there for us; but that is not so with The Lord. He loves you 'with an EVER-LASTING love'.

I pray in Jesus' Name that your ears will be MORE widely open to His voice; His leading; His direction; to know PRECISELY what to do; what not to do; and to follow the Scripture and BELIEVE it..."Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from evil. It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones." Proverbs 3:5-9.

No matter WHAT comes our way John, ALL of it; as someone taught me; is 'filtered' through God's loving hands. Nothing can befall us that is beyond God's love. The HARDEST circumstances are ALWAYS to show us something. God's love. His mercy. His Truth. His provision. He doesn't beat us up to be cruel; He is not a sinner as we are; ALL that He does; ALL that He allows, is for SOME good. OUR good; or somehow; the good of someone else.

I will share something The Lord gave me a few years ago for a woman I know who was going through a difficult time; including not having family members to show her compassion. The Lord gave me this to say to her; and I'll share it with you...."If you have everything BUT Jesus; you have NOTHING. If you have NOTHING but Jesus; you have EVERYTHING."

And so it is for all of us. I pray you come to the place where, IF you DO become homeless; that The Lord will cause you to see it as a blessing; to have ALL worldly ENTANGLEMENTS taken from you; that you may have Christ and HE ALONE; which is EVERYTHING. I pray you won't feel any fear or abandonment of The Faith; but that That Faith will grow STRONGER; and that God's PERFECT will may done to, for and in you.

Dear Mike, Born again believers walk by faith, not by sight or feelings. There have been times when I didn't feel His presence, but by faith I knew He was with me because He promised never to leave us. You must have faith. I can't stress that strong enough.

2 Corinthians 5:7 - (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)

Trust him, believe His promises, lean on Him no matter the situation or your feelings, or your own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5-6 - Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

If you are not born again, read the following.

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.- Romans 10:9-13

Hi Bev. Psalm 139:14 in the KJV does show what you're looking for. And you could add verse 17 to verse 14.

Other possible Scriptures to consider: Isaiah 49:16; Proverbs 3:5,6.

David, I feel so much compassion for you I know that that Lord God Almighty is able to help you and I'm praying for you. I know how miserable it is to not sleep. And it's detrimental to your health. I'm so glad you're giving us an opportunity to pray with you about this.

Lord, PLEASE begin to heal David. Let his sleep be sweet. Let him deep sleep. Remove every hinderance. Let the power of the Holy Ghost be heavy upon him at night to usher him into a blessed Holy Spirit sleep. Let heavenly rest flow through and permeate every cell and component of his being. I pray this in Jesus name because the Word says that our sleep should be sweet.

Verse 27-If it is within our power to help someone we should not hold back. We can help materially, emotionally, or physically but the important thing to do is to help if we can.
