Response to Edrizal's questions of 8/22/11 about the "binding and loosing" of Matt.16:18. To me, this is describing the keys to the kingdom of heaven. In other words, to Peter and the church based on the premise "Thou (Jesus) art the Christ, the son of the living God", Jesus will give the power to bind and loose that which pertains to the realm of God's will being fulfilled, even while we are on earth. Believers in the solid rock, Jesus, now are authorized to bind the underworld powers and loose their victims like Jesus did while he was on earth. See John 14:12. They in turn recruit a force of "teachers" and/or ""leaders""who will have paid substantial sums for their qualifications and consequent right to exercise authority within the institution. They will have extensive academic understanding of the doctrines involved but of course reject absolutely any suggestion that the prophetic teaching be taken literally.
They in return recruit followers who become involved in all The ritualistic games and symbolic iconography designed to distinguish their institution from all other similar purveyors of delusion. They create the wealth of the institution.
From this will spring the internecine conflicts which can be anything from bitter commercial rivalry through vandalism, thuggery, terrorism to out and out war! Empires,global business and cultures all live and die in the ignorance propagated by world rulers this way in the name of truth.
The prophet originally arrived to warn people of the error they are in, the consequence that will follow and the steps required to resolve the negative destiny everyone faces as a result. So the essence of the summary is that the Holy knowledge which has been made available over the years is not just something to be passed on to others and used as a source of income and self-promotion: it is the key to happiness for every living person to reach out for after abandoning a way of life which brings nothing but woe , punctuated, for the lucky ones, by moments of relief, and inescapable by any other means, for all.The key, the tools to overcome and dissolve each and every one of our individual legion of personal demons, if we just trust and believe , and the guidance to keep us on the strait and narrow which is what we were all created for
There can be only 1 head of the Church & that is Jesus. He paid the supreme price for it. He said " Flesh and Blood has not revealed this" It was the Holy Spirit that revealed that to Peter. We are all just servants. There is no evidence to support that Peter was ever in Rome. What I got out of this scripture is the only way we able to stand in Our Salvation; Is to have have an experience that flesh and Blood has revealed. The one we will never forget

I would like to answer the question: The Bible says in Romans 8:9 that if we have not the spirit of Christ he is none of his, That's why we must be born again in John 3:3-7 of the water and the spirit. Jesus told peter that, in Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. The Bible is true and very well spoken and we must obey. On the day of pentecost peter used that key and he told the people how to be saved in Acts 2:38-47 and the Lord added to the CHURCH daily such as should be saved, the word CHURCH stand out because it was the key to salvation from the plan Jesus spoke to peter about. To reply to these comments on the Holy Ghost, God loves everyone reguardless of your state and condition. We as human has to be very careful of every word comes from our lips, Mark 3:29 do not speak against this or you will lose your soul. Please read the word and study it for youself and ask God for an understanding 1Peter 3:21 believe it, here it and be a doer for the sake of your soul. Read Matthew 16:18-19 where Jesus gave peter the keys to the kingdom of heaven, Acts 2:1 on the day of pentecost when the door was to be open, Acts 2:37-47 where the people gladly received the word and from that day forward they continued in the doctrine that was told them from Peter which has the keys to the kingdom of heaven strictly spoken to him by Jesus in Matthew 16:18-19. We as a people of God has to obey the scriptures and it is not so much as the name of your church, you have to obey truth. One minute Jesus calls Simon "Peter" then next moment he calls him "Satan" because Simon tries to persuade Jesus to put his bodily desires before God's purpose. Today we recognise so many who teach one thing and practice another and we wonder why are they teachers if they recognise God's truth but dont reach out for it themselves?
This at the end of chapter 16. You continue to read into chapter 17 where Christ explains to the desciples that John the baptist was the re-incarnation of Eli'as "But I say unto you, That Eli'as is come already and they knew him not," Verse 13 "Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist." V.18 Thoughts on when and how to prevail. If hades (the underworld) does not prevail, apparently the church does. Is this agressive victory only at the resurrection of the just in Christ, or is it being won during our life on earth? Jesus continues to compliment Peter by saying that he would posses the keys of the kingdom of heaven while on earth. Wouldn't believers on this solid rock also be able to bind the underworld powers and loose those that are enslaved to sin. We've got the power in the name of Jesus.
I agree with most of the comments above. Here is another line of reasoning to consider. 1 Corinthians 11:3 says that woman has a head which is man, man has a head which is Christ, and Christ has a head which is God. Whatever privileges were given to Peter does not dimishish the fact that he has a head and that is Christ. As the scripture point out "The head of every man is Christ." What else do we know about Christ? Ephesians 1:22 says that God made him head over all things to the congregation. This means that those who are given oversight in the congregation still answer to Jesus as their head. They must exercise their authority in imitation of Christ and accoring to Christ teachings not their own. Please keep these thoughts in mind as I continue.
The Catholic Church has elevated Peter and all who succeed him as Pope. This non-biblical or Latin term means "father or Papa." Jesus specifically taught his disciples which included Peter not to call anyone on earth "father" in a religious reverencial way. ( Matthew 23:9, 10) The Jewish religious leaders desried titles of sorts. Jesus instead said that all you are brothers. Since the Catholic Church says that it is perfectly scriptural to call these men Popes they are in effect saying that Peter an all who succeed him are fathers of the church. If they are fathers then this makes them head. However, if Paul said that Jesus is head and if the Catholic Church says Peter and the rest are heads then the Church has two heads. They go against the headship arrangement for the Christian Congregation and they go agaisnt s direct order from Christ not to be called father.
People can call Peter a rock all they want and as mentioned by the comments above he was rock like in his faith and in his confession of Jesus being the Christ, Son of the living God. The Skin covering of Adam & Eve representing what God will do to remove the CURSE (DEATH) which came into the world by ONE MAN, and so SIN entered the world, and DEATH passeth to ALL MEN, for ALL HAVE SIN. i dont see what u r saying here, i understood it by Peter knowing who Christ was, and how flesh and blood could not reveal it, but the Spirit of the Father, how the keys were given cuz of the knowledge of revelation.... DISIPLINE???

He is the IMAGE OF THE INVICIBLE GOD ( Colossians 1:15) He is the ONE True GOD that was manifest in the FLESH ( 1 Timothy 3;16) He is the True God and eternal LIFE ( 1 John 5:20) And He will be SOON COMING IN THE CLOUDS FOR HIS BRIDE (The Church) Titus 2:13) ( Matthew 16:18-19) For there is no other name in heaven whereby we must be saved ( Acts 4:12) He is the messiah that the Israelites until now still waiting for Him to come, but doesnt understand this Messiah is already came back to heaven in His throne as God Spirit ( John 4:24) To God be the glory in Jesus Christ name, amen.
