I think this is a wonderful teaching from God that shows us that Jesus wants us to be strong and brave and trust in Him to deliver us if and when we confront any problem or evil. Like King David whom was only a seventeen year old teenager at the time but even though in the world David was just a boy, thru Jesus he was made sronger than an experianced gigantic frightning monster of a man thru faith. But also there is a temptation here if one is not careful in reading this to misunderstand the character of God and embrace violence and evil in this story. If one glories in the mightiness of David as a warrior and a mighty man and lets the violence of slaying the giant in this touch your heart this is wrong God hates violence and even slew almost all mankind for having violent hearts in the deluge of the flood in Genesis saving only Noah and his family. And even King David who surely is one of the most holy of men and one of the most blessed of prophets of God when he, King David wanted to build God a temple God said to him no your son shall build it because you are a man of war with bloody hands because God is love and abhors violence so we should always hate violence too. Because God is humble and gentle and love and if we embrace violence even against evil we are not embracing God. This is even evident in the experiance the apostles had when they asked the Lord should we call down fire from heaven on some people that didn't recieve them and Jesus said basically you do not know the kind of God who you serve if this is what you want to do. Not exact words of the verse but the intent. That is because God is love but this all being said there is even a time to kill as it says in the bible there is a season for all things even to kill. But this is a very serious thing and you should know in your heart from God when it is the right time to kill and should never ever be gorified or taken lightly in any way. I have always heard that Saul had some kind of memory problem in that he forgot who David was (vv 55-58). But as I read the passage now, it seems that Saul never asked what David's name was. It even says in v. 15 that David left Saul to feed his father's sheep. So Saul had seen David not too awful long ago. I think that Saul asked Abner who David's father was so he would know who to exempt from taxes (v. 25). Just a small observation.
