10And not onely this, but when Rebecca also had conceiued by one, euen by our father Isaac, 11(For the children being not yet borne, neither hauing done any good or euil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of workes, but of him that calleth.) 12It was said vnto her, The elder shall serue the yonger. 13As it is written, Iacob haue I loued, but Esau haue I hated. 14What shall we say then? Is there vnrighteousnes with God? God forbid.

9:12 The elder - Esau. Shall serve the younger - Not in person, for he never did; but in his posterity. Accordingly the Edomites were often brought into subjection by the Israelites. #Gen 25:23|.
People's Bible Notes for Romans 9:12
Ro 9:12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. It was said to Rebecca, "Two nations are in thy womb, . . . one people shall be stronger than the other, and the elder (people) shall serve the younger" (Ge 25:23). Esau never served Jacob, but the Edomites, descended from Jacob, served the Israelites (2Sa 8:14 1Ch 18:13). The election here is that of a race.
