Jesus is speaking of the 42 months(3 1/2 years) of The Tribulation. Most think the Tribulation will will start and last 7 years. Jesus' ministry lasted 42 months which is 3 1/2 years. The antichrist's period will last 42 months as told in Revelation 13, so the total period will be 42 + 42 months.
